Geek chic

I have a dirty secret. When no one is around, when I know no one is going to be home I do something that would make some people look at me differently.

I crochet.

I've been doing it for a long time and occaisionally I try to give it up but somehow I always start up again. I will admit kittens and crochet don't mix so I have to wait until they have collapsed at night before I pull out the balls of wool.

Anyway, I'm going to go out on a limb and say I think it's going to come back into fashion. Honestly.

Crochet is given a bad name by doilies and shawls. I don't do that kind of crochet. I make cool crochet. Honestly.

Last Friday some good friends had their baby 7 weeks early. Fortunately although he gave his parents one hell of a shock, otherwise everyone is doing well.

Apart from me. I have 7 weeks less to make something. Hence I've spent the last couple of days crocheting like a crazy person. Just like a crazy person.

The result - my abominable baby booties. It'll be a little while before little Marcus grows into them but I think they are almost as cute as he is

Love the booties. I haven't crocheted since I was 13 and would love to take it up again. Eventually,it'll make it to the top of the priority list...

Adorable... in a strange and scary kind of way. I wish I could crochet. I've tried to learn but it didn't click with me so I'm sticking to knitting.

About Me

I once made the mistake of cooking the entire 1966 Edmonds cookbook in a year. Now I blog from the safety of the couch. I live in New Zealand, a tiny (well relatively small compared to, say, Russia) cluster of Islands in the South Pacific. It's a verdant, smog free (except for Christchurch), sheepish, laidback kind of a place. I've lived at both ends of the country so I feel entitled to make jokes at the expense of both the Aucklanders (the "big city" where most of us Kiwi's live) and the Mainlanders (the folk who live in the south of the country which is rather more dramatic of aspect, devoid of population). A kumara, for those who aren't aware, is the Maori (the native peoples of NZ)word for sweet potato - generally refering to the purple/red skinned variety with yellow flesh. Kiwi's love kumara. If you dance with one you will probably need to lead. I am by training and past experiance a food scientist and by profession a food marketer, two professions blamed for messing with the nations food. I'd like to give a little something back to the food by letting it mess me up a bit. This is a collection of random musings about food and life in general.
